Un-hooked

Can you refuse an IV or Hep block during labor? I'm 23 weeks and this is my third pregnancy. I just hate the thought of being "hooked up" to anything but a fetal monitor.

Am I being too extreme with this request or is this just hospital policy?

I tried to refuse in my second birth and they said I needed a heplock as a measure against "emergency." Like, in case I needed a medication in a split second (or in case they wanted to give me pitocin, which is exactly what they weaned me on to, slowly, after a bag of fluids which bloated me like a psycho and made me have to pee which I could not do because of the epidural that I got after the pitocin contractions were so bad that I abandoned my natural birth plans entirely) so I agreed to heplock. I asked for occasional fetal monitoring instead of constant so I could move around, but once they give you a drug, you HAVE to have constant monitoring.
Heplock is a slippery slope, I would avoid it if AT ALL possible. Coming from someone who had two hospital births and a homebirth with zero interventions, the less interventions, the more positive your experience will be! <3 I hope you have a great labor and delivery, hire a doula! ;)
